Over 1500 Nigerian students face deportation in UK

Around 2,600 foreign students could be deported from Britain after their university was stripped of its ability to sponsor visas for pupils beyond the European Union, the government announced Thursday. The move provoked dismay from students and accusations that the move by the Conservative-led government, which is bent on reducing immigration, could damage Britain’s global reputation.

London Metropolitan University has lost its “highly trusted status” because a survey found significant problems with the qualifications of many of its foreign students, Immigration Minister Damian Green said.

In a “significant proportion” of cases, there was no documentation that students had a good standard of English, Green said, and there was no proof that half of those sampled were attending lectures. He said the sampling of the university’s foreign students indicated that more than a quarter did not have current permission to be in the country.

“Any one of those breaches would be serious,” Green told BBC radio. “We found all three of those breaches at London Metropolitan.”

A degree from a U.K. university is highly prized by many students abroad, and those from outside the European Union often pay higher fees than residents. The British government, which has cracked down on immigration in multiple ways, has pointed to student visas as a category ripe for abuse by those who may instead be looking for work.

London Metropolitan has 30,000 students, and 2,600 are affected by the government’s decision, said university spokesman Nick Hansen. Students from other European Union countries don’t need visas.
The affected students will have 60 days to find new sponsors once they are formally notified by the government, or they could be deported. A task force has been set up to help genuine students who otherwise qualify for visas, Universities Minister David Willetts said, but with the fall term imminent students have little time to find new sponsors and courses.

25 Year Old Man Caught Pants Down With His Grandma

Police in Kirinyaga are holding a 25 year old man who is alleged of raping his 75 year old grandmother at her home in Kiandieri village. The man was caught by his brothers and cousin who handed him to a group of an irate mob baying for his blood.

According to the area Chief Jeremiah Kabui, the man entered his granny’s home in the evening and found her in bed since she was sick and bed ridden. The man raped her forcing the woman to scream.

The man’s brothers and cousins who live at the same estate heard the elderly woman’s distress calls and went to the house but were astonished to find their brother pants down mounting on the sick woman.

A crowd of residents who had also heard the woman’s call for help rushed to the resident and wanted to kill him. They however only managed to give him some slaps and punches as the area chief stopped them and handed him over to authorities.

Roman Abramovich Wins The Biggest Private Court Case In History at $6.5 Billion

The Chelsea FC owner, one of the richest and most private men in the world, was accused of black-mailing Boris Berezovsky into selling his interests in the oil company and aluminium conglomerate they founded together at a knock-down price.
Mr Abramovich in turn, accused Mr Berezovsky of extorting money from him for political influence and claimed he had paid him $1.3bn to buy his freedom when Mr Berezovsky fell out of favour with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

In a year-long case that became highly personal, one of Mr Abramovich’s associates even accused Mr Berezovsky of sending a threatening text message to a potential witness, signed “Dr Evil”, the pantomime villain from the James Bond spoof films, Austin Powers. The message was never produced.
Mr Abramovich’s lawyers also accused Mr Berezovsky of “truly prodigious powers of self-deception” and giving evidence coloured by his “vanity and his self-obsession.”
They claimed that Mr Berezovksy was an “angry and embittered man” of “remarkable vanity and self-importance” which was “aggravated by a highly personal resentment of Mr Abramovich.”

“Large parts of his evidence can only be described as mendacious and dishonest,” they said in submissions to the court.
“He believes that Mr Abramovich has supplanted him in a position which is rightfully his and that he has acquired a sort of political influence under President Putin which he once enjoyed under a very different regime of Boris Yeltsin.”
Mr Berezovsky was once a “classic power broker” and one of the most influential oligarchs in Russia but the relationship was founded on krysha - political protection – and “the activities of a krysha or protector are inherently corrupt,” Jonathan Sumption QC, for Mr Abramovich, said in a written statement.
Mr Berezovsky "thought he had personally created Mr Abramovich out of nothing and put him in a position where he had only to sit there for vast sums of money to flow into his lap,” he added.
Laurence Rabinowitz QC, for Mr Berezovsky, had told the court that the two men had worked together during the Russian privatisation sales in the mid-1990s that followed the fall of communism to acquire an asset that would make them “wealthy beyond the wildest dreams of most people.”
In the process they “became and remained good friends” he said, but they fell out when Mr Berezovsky, who had adopted a high political profile in Russia through his control of a television station called ORT, fell foul of the Kremlin and was forced to leave the country and seek asylum in Britain.

The television channel had run a number of stories criticising Mr Putin for the failure to rescue 118 Russian sailors from the sunken nuclear submarine, the Kursk.
That, he said left Mr Abramovich in a position where he was “in effect required to make a choice - to remain loyal to Mr Berezovsky, his friend and mentor and the person to whom he owed his newly acquired great fortune, or instead, as we submit, to betray Mr Berezovsky and to seek to profit from his difficulties.”
“It is our case that Mr Abramovich at that point demonstrated that he was a man to whom wealth and influence mattered more than friendship and loyalty and this has led him, finally, to go so far as to even deny that he and Mr Berezovsky were actually ever friends,” he added.
The case rested on a number of key meetings at the end of 2000 in which the two men and a third partner, Badri Patarkatsishvili, a Georgian businessman who died at his Surrey mansion three years ago from a heart attack, discussed transferring their assets to the West.
Security men working for Mr Patarkatsishvili secretly recorded the first meeting at Le Bourget airport near Paris and Mr Berezovsky later bought the tape for $50m.
At the second meeting, at Mr Berezovsky’s chateau near Cap D’Antibes in France, Berezovsky claimed that Mr Abramovich told him the Kremlin would remove his TV station from him if he did not sell it and prevent the release from jail of a close friend of Mr Berezovsky.
Mr Abramovich claimed there was no such meeting and the pair actually met at the French ski resort of Megeve a few weeks later and agreed to a $1.3bn pay-off.
In a last snub to Mr Berezovsky, Mr Abramovich allegedly sold his 25 per cent share of the company Rusal, the Aluminium conglomerate, for £1bn, to Oleg Deripaska, an oligarch with ties to both George Osborne, the shadow chancellor and Peter Mandelson, the former Labour spin doctor.
The sale meant Mr Deripaska owned 75 per cent of the company and Mr Berezovsky and his partner were forced to accept just £289m for the remaining 25 per cent.

Boko Haram Leaks Personal Information Of SSS

Personnel records of former and current members of Nigeria's top domestic spy agency, including home addresses and names of immediate family members, has been leaked onto the Internet. They leaked in a threatening message that claimed to come from a radical Islamist sect that's killed hundreds of people this year alone.
The leak of personal data of more than 60 past and current employees of Nigeria's State Security Service remained easily accessible on the Internet for days and had details about the agency's director-general, including his mobile phone number, bank account particulars, and contact information for his son. Many of the agents listed who could be reached by the AP said they received no official warning from the spy agency that their information had been posted online nor been otherwise alerted.
The material has been deleted from the comment section of a website, but the security breach astonished veterans and calls into question whether Nigeria's intelligence community, whose agents already have released suspected terrorists out of religious and ethnic sympathies, are too compromised from within to stop the violence now plaguing Africa's most populous nation.
"This is a national embarrassment," said one Nigerian intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as information about the leak was not to have been made public.
Many agents for the typically secretive agency are preoccupied with concealing their identities, as most try to blend unnoticed into society.
The State Security Service, created in 1986 by then-military ruler Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, monitors domestic dissent in Nigeria, an oil-rich nation of more than 160 million people. Though geared toward stopping terrorism and destabilising coups, the agency routinely faces criticism for targeting government critics. In Abuja, Nigeria's capital, the agency operates out of cars made to look like the many green taxis that roam the streets. Plain-clothed agents of the service routinely question foreign journalists at airports, border crossings and on city streets if they see reporters conducting interviews.
Agents carrying assault rifles often guard major events in the country. Many agents for the typically secretive agency are preoccupied with concealing their identities, as most try to blend unnoticed into society. The information leak came in two postings earlier this month on a website that provides rewritten news on Nigeria.
The first posting threatened to kill agents of the State Security Service on behalf of Boko Haram, a radical Islamist sect responsible for more than 660 killings this year alone in Nigeria. The second posting simply offered a block of text containing biographical and other details about the agents.

Alleged Shakira And Pique Sextape Being Put Up For Sale

Two former employees of Delectable Singer Shakira are shopping a video they claim shows the pop singer and her boyfriend having sex on a boat.

An unidentified Colombian couple, who worked for Shakira for 11 years, are trying to sell a 15-minute clip - purportedly of the recording artist and FC Barcelona football player Gerard Pique -- to the Spanish media for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The former employees allege they were unfairly dismissed after refusing to cook the singer a late-night meal, a claim Shakira's legal team has denied, Colombia Reports said.

"The video lasts about 15 minutes. I guess it's recorded with a mobile phone by an employee who was in the cockpit of the boat," a Barcelona agent to whom the video sellers showed the clip told the Spanish magazine Interviu. He said he can't tell for sure that it is Shakira. "I thought that it had been edited," he said.

54 Year Old Woman Commits Suicide In Ibadan

A 54 year old woman, Oluwabunmi Oluwafemi, in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, has committed
suicide. She was declared missing by her family over the weekend, however the body of the
mother of 4 was found hanging on a tree beside the popular Gada-Odo/Ona River on Monday. Ms. Oluwafemi who used to reside in Bembo, Apata area of Ibadan, was said to have gone to spend the weekend with her first child, Opeyemi Oluwafemi, in Olugbode, Odo-Ona area of the town before the calamity.

On Friday night, Mr. Oluwafemi attended a church vigil. At the break of dawn, he returned home and found that his mother was missing.

"I return home from vigil and discovered her absence at home, hence, a report of her missing was made known to the police, but three days later after a search party, we discovered her corpse hanging on the tree here," he said.

Mr. Oluwafemi and other members of his family immediately organized a search party and reported the missing case to the police. But on Monday, the woman was found dead having hung herself on a tree.

The deceased's son, Mr. Olufemi, said his mother never showed any sign that she will kill herself. Another relative, Caroline Ayodele, who wept profusely also expressed shock over the development, adding that there did not seem to
be a reason for late Ms. Oluwafemi to have committed suicide.

At the scene of the suicide, efforts were being made by some plain clothes policemen to bring down the corpse. Also many residents were seen trooping to the scene in order to catch a glimpse of the corpse.

Ebonyi police arrest 7 men for killing 7-year-old girl

Officers of the Ebonyi State Police Command, on Tuesday, announced the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the murder of a 7-year-old girl, Ukamaka Ogboji.

The victim was allegedly killed for ritual purposes on Sunday at Agubia in Ikwo Local Government Area of the state. The suspects had earlier kidnapped Ogboji for monetary gains, and then dismembered her body parts before dumping same in a cassava farm.

The State Police Command spokesperson, Sylvester Igbo, while confirming the arrest of the suspects, commended the community youth organisation known as Ebonyi Youth Assembly for their assistance towards the arrest of the suspects.

Igbo revealed that two of the suspects had already confessed to the crime, adding that the police had commenced full investigation to ascertain the motive behind the brutal killing of the deceased.
“What we have observed at the scene made us to attribute the killing to ritual killing and not kidnapping, because the corpse of the deceased was without two legs, hands and eyes,” he said.

“From the act, it is a ritual killing. Through police investigation, we have been able to arrest seven suspects, among whom two have confessed to the crime. One of them confessed that his mother was the spiritual mother of the girl when she was baptised.”

Minister of Power, Bart Nnaji, Resigns

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria yesterday accepted the resignation of Barth Nnaji, the hitherto Minister of Power.

The resignation is reportedly connected to the revelations first premiered by Business Day which linked the former cabinet member to an underground bid for Afam Power Station.

Nnaji revealed to the National Council on Privatiation last Friday that his company, Geometrics, was a shareholder in a company that bid for the Afam Power Station.

Afam Power Station has an installed capacity of 775 Megawatts which is 18% of the country's current total power generation.

The revelation came as a surprise, although many Nigerians werealready aware that the privatiation of PHCN was simply an unbundling of the country's power assets to the cabal.

However the undoing of Mr. Nnaji may have come about as a result of the dispute between himself as minister and PHCN employees.

The PHCN employees were embittered by Nnaji's refusal to pay them adequate terminal benefits running into hundreds of billionsof Naira. The conflict-of-interest being he would not want an assethe was planning to acquire to be hugely indebted to the soon-to-be disengaged PHCN staff.

Faces Of Cynthia's Murderers Plus Updated Information Concerning The Case

It was a trag--carnival like mood at a Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, which was filled to capacity on Monday as the police arraigned four suspects over the murder of Cynthia Osokogu, daughter of Maj-Gen Frank Osukogu (retd.), on July 22, 2012.

The accused persons were also charged with robbing the deceased of her artificial sex toy vibrator, shoes, hand bag, BlackBerry phone, passport, driving licence, three wristwatches, four rings, three pairs of earrings and other properties.

The accused persons – Okwumo Nwabufo (33), Ezike Olisaeloka (23), Orji Osita (32) and Maduakor Chukwunonso (25) – were charged with eight offences.

Nwabufo and Olisaeloka are students while Osita and Chukwunonso are pharmacists.

Some of the charges levelled against the accused were murder, rape, robbery, administering an obnoxious substance to the deceased without her consent.

The Magistrate, Mr Olalekan Aka-Bashorun, said the accused persons should be remanded in prison custody pending the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The case was then adjourned till October 3, 2012.

A mini-drama however unfolded outside the court room as journalists and members of the public scrambled to take pictures of the accused persons.

“The pharmacists are not killers. Their charges were only mixed up with those of the other two suspects (Nwabufo and Olisaeloka),” their lawyer said.

Meanwhile, the Osokogu family has said Cynthia would be buried on September 7, 2012 at Bebe, Ovia Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Mrs. Joy Osokogu, said her daughter was “very industrious, hardworking and a respectful child.” She advised youths to be very cautious of making friends with people that they do not know.

She said, “Youths should be very careful, especially when they are making friends on the social media. Like we have seen in the case of my daughter, such friends may have ulterior motives.”

Quote of the day - 2Face

“I have been through a lot and I have learnt my lessons. Now, I am wiser than some old men. Honestly, at the peak of my trials, life almost ceased to mean anything to me. The negative publicity would have killed me and my music career. But it made me stronger, wiser, and a better person,”  - TuFace

Davido Denied Visa To London

Can you remember Davido's "No Visa" track ? No? Well its a track on the O.B.O album. Davido claimed he doesn't need a Visa application to travel around the world on that song, but he has wrong.
Davido was expected to perform alongside D'Banj in London tonight but was denied VISA. He issued a statement yesterday via his official Twitter page (@iam_Davido) on what went wrong.

See statement below;

"TO ALL MY FANS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM (UK), WHO I VERY MUCH APPRECIATE,

I regret to let you know that I will not be performing along side my most respected big brother and friend D’BANJ at the scheduled show of August 27, 2012 in London.

I am both a Nigerian citizen, as well as an American citizen, I carry both the Nigerian and the American passports. As an American citizen, I do not require a visa to enter the United Kingdom, however I require a work permit in the UK for any paid performance such as the scheduled August 27, 2012 in London, that is the law in the United Kingdom. I applied for a work permit at the British Embassy in Abuja/Lagos but unfortunately up till the close of business on Friday August 24, 2012 I was unable to obtain a work permit, as a result I have to cancel my performance and my trip to the United Kingdom altogether. I apologize for the inconvenience and the disappointment, but be rest assured that I will make it up to you all on a future date. You will agree with me that it is better to be law abiding at all times and in every jurisdictions. Finally, please go out en mass to support the Koko Master (D’BANJ) and have a wonderful night on August 27, 2012."
